
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team fresh off a sweep of Ohio State takes to the road to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., for a weekend series (Nov. 5-6) against the Lake Superior Lakers. The puck will drop each night at 7:05 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena. NMU is 0-3-2 in the past five games at Taffy Abel Arena. The series marks the beginning of the chase for the Cappo Cup which goes annually to the winner of the yearly four-game set between NMU and LSSU.
Entering the weekend the Wildcats are 2-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) action. The Lakers are 2-4-2and 0-3-1 CCHA. In the conference race the ‘Cats sit in fifth place while LSSU is tied for ninth. Last weekend the ‘Cats took care of Ohio State (2-1, 4-3) while the Lakers lost to Miami (6-2) and tied/shootout loss to the RedHawks (2-2 OT).
Tyler Gron (3-3-6) and Greger Hanson (1-5-6) share the team lead in points with six each. Gron and Justin Florek each have three goals to pace the ‘Cats. Hanson has a team-high five assists. This week’s CCHA Goaltender of the Week, Jared Coreau is 2-1-1 with a 3.30 goal-against average and a .916 save-percentage. As a team the ‘Cats are averaging 2.29 goals a game and giving up 4.00.
Rick Schofield leads the Lakers with 10 points on three goals and a team-high seven assists. Matt Cowie has a team-leading four goals. Between the pipes Brian Mahoney-Wilson is 1-3-1 with a 4.18 goal-against average and a .871 save-percentage. The Lakers are averaging almost three goals a game (2.88) and yielding 4.12.
