Soccer Hosts Ferris State in GLIAC Quarterfinals
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team will host a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament quarterfinal game from the Outdoor Fields on Tuesday (Nov. 2). The Wildcats are a No. 3 seed as they host the sixth seeded Ferris State Bulldogs. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
NMU is 8-4-5 and 8-4-3 in the GLIAC after defeating Michigan Tech (2-1) in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Dana Stephens scored late in the overtime period afterMTU’s goalkeeper mishandled the ball. Stephens picked up the free ball and softly kicked it into the open net. For Stephens, it was her team leading ninth goal of the season.
Jessica Lusardi scored her first goal as a Wildcat at the 11 minute mark of the first half to give the Wildcats the lead. Dana Stephens started the play with a shot that was saved by MTU’s goalkeeper but the rebound went right to Lusardi for an easy put back goal.
Head coach Matt Granstrand is proud of his team, “Third in the conference is the best we’ve ever done. We’re proud of the fact that we’re third. We’re proud that we’re in contention for an NCAA bid. It’s a fantastic group and it’s been a fun year.”
NMU is led in scoring (goals-assists) by Dana Stephens (9-2), Amelia Johnson (8-0) and Kari Buckel (4-6). Jessica Baker has been doing most of the goalkeeping duties and holds a .99 goals against average and an .866 save percentage.
The Ferris State Bulldogs come to Marquette with a 7-8-3 overall record. The Bulldogs are 7-6-2 in the GLIAC. Ferris has lost three games in a row. Bri Borgman leads Ferris with 10 goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Rachel McCollum has a 1.22 goals against average and holds an .836 save percentage.
The game should be a hard fought battle as NMU and Ferris tied both of the games that they played this year. The score was 0-0, Sept. 17 in Marquette and 1-1, Oct. 17 in Big Rapids.
Tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $2 for students. Come support the Wildcats for the final home game as they try to advance to Allendale for the GLIAC championship.
