MARQUETTE, Mich. – The NMU soccer team (7-4-5, 7-4-3 GLIAC) plays its final regular season game at home this Saturday (Oct. 30) as Michigan Tech comes to Marquette for a noon start. The Wildcats will don pink jerseys for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the four seniors will be honored.
Last week the Wildcats snapped their five game winless streak with a 2-1 win at Saginaw Valley State. Senior Kari Buckel and sophomore Amelia Johnson scored the goals. Johnson’s goal was her third game-winning goal of the season which leads the team and is eighth in the GLIAC. Buckel’s goal was her fourth of the season.
Sunday (Oct. 24), the ‘Cats traveled to Northwood, losing 4-1. Brekelle Sellers scored her first career goal in the loss.
Michigan Tech is 7-9-0 and 5-9-0 in the GLIAC in its first season. The Huskies will also be playing their final regular season game when they travel to Marquette. MTU has lost four in a row and are five and five in their last 10 games.
NMU defeated MTU 4-1 earlier this season (Sep. 8) in Houghton.
NMU’s four seniors are Dana Bush, Kari Buckel, Anne Spears and Dana Stephens. Bush, from Gaylord, Michigan, has appeared in 16 games as a goalkeeper. She picked up her first win in an 11-0 shutout victory against Finlandia in 2006.
Kari Buckel is from Traverse City, Michigan and was an All-GLIAC Second Team selection in 2008 after scoring 11 goals on the season. She has 41 career points including 25 goals.
Anne Spears is from Edmonton, Alberta and plays defense. She scored a goal in 2007 and has been twice selected to the All-GLIAC Academic Team.
Dana Stephens is from Wyandotte, Michigan and has 26 career goals. Last season, Stephens was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection.
The NMU soccer team will be wearing pink jerseys for the game as Northern Michigan University Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports Department is partnering with the Marquette General Foundation for a day-long benefit for the Marquette General Cancer Center in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“The Pink Experience” t-shirts will be available for $10 at the game. The shirts are also available at the Cats Corner gift shop inside the Superior Dome, at the Recreational Center in the PEIF and at the Marquette General Foundation office.
