MARQUETTE, Mich. – After struggling last night against the Ferris State Bulldogs the Northern Michigan University volleyball team, currently ranked 15th in the nation, took care of the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals Saturday afternoon in three straight. NMU ran its record to 19-1 overall and 13-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play with the 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 win. The Cardinals drop to 11-9 and 6-7 GLIAC.
Ana Lopes and Emma Wolfe led the ‘Cats with nine kills each. Lopes did not record an error in 20 total attempts (.450). As a team the ‘Cats had 34 kills in 99 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .232. NMU’s side out percentage in the final two sets was over 70 percent. In the second set the side out percentage was 84 percent (16-19) while in the third set it was 73 percent (14-19).
Abby Lovell had 22 of NMU’s 29 assists for the match. The ‘Cats tallied five service aces on the afternoon. On the defensive front, Becca Feuerherd recorded nine digs while teammate Lopes added eight. At the net NMU had one block solo and two block assists.
The ‘Cats will play its third match in three days tomorrow (Oct. 24) against Grand Valley State. Action begins at 2 p.m. in Vandament Arena.
