OXFORD, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened up Central Collegiate Hockey Association play Friday night in Oxford, Ohio against the Miami RedHawks. NMU was outshot 28-21, but on the scoreboard the home team shutout the Wildcats by a score of 4-0.
NMU is still in search of its first win for the 2010-11 season as the team falls to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in CCCHA play. Miami improves to 3-1-1 and 1-0-0 respectively.
The RedHawks scored a goal in each of the first two periods of play and then added two in the final frame. Carter Camper scored the first goal for the home team at 2:04 of the opening period on the power play Andy Miele made the score 2-0 with a goal at 13:26 of the second period.
Scoring in the third period were Pat Cannone (4:40) and Cameron Schilling (17:34). Both goals were scored with the extra skater.
For the night Miami was 3-8 on the power play while the ‘Cats were 0-5. NMU had 12 penalties called for 35 penalty minutes while Miami had eight penalties for 16 minutes.
Reid Ellingson turned away 24 shots for the ‘Cats. Cody Reichard for the RedHawks recorded the shutout with 21 saves.
The two teams will play the backend of the two-game set tomorrow night (Oct. 23) with the puck dropping at 7:35 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena.
