UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team snapped its five-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over Saginaw Valley State Friday. NMU had gone 0-3-2 in its past five games. With the win the ‘Cats improve to 7-3-5 overall on the season and 7-3-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. The Cardinals fall to 8-6-1 and 7-5-1 respectively.
Kari Buckel with her fourth goal of the season gave NMU the 1-0 lead at 45:19. Buckel’s goal was unassisted. Saginaw Valley State tied the score with a goal by Charley Porter about 39 minutes later (84:14). Amelia Johnson kicked home the game-winner just seconds before the end of regulation (89:59) for her eighth of the season. Johnson’s goal was also unassisted.
NMU recorded 18 shots on the day to seven for Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals had two corner kicks while the ‘Cats did not record one. Jessica Baker tallied three saves for the game while her counterpart from Saginaw Valley State, Anne Berschbach, had six.
