MARQUETTE, Mich. – For a time Friday night at Vandament Arena it looked as if the Ferris State Bulldogs would upset the 15th ranked Northern Michigan University volleyball team. NMU took the first two sets (25-19, 25-22) before Ferris took the next two (15-25, 23-25) to set up a fifth and deciding set. The fifth set went back and forth during the early stages, but with NMU holding a 10-7 lead the Wildcats rattled off five of the next eight points to take the set 15-10.
Sami Vierk led the ‘Cats with 12 kills in 33 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .091. Emma Wolfe recorded 11 kills in 47 total attempts (.106). As a team the ‘Cats had 48 kills in 153 total attempts fir a hitting percentage of .150. NMU’s side out percentage in the first set was 80 percent (16-20) while it was 75 percent in the fifth set (9-12).
Abby Lovell had 37 of the 45 assists for the match. Ana Lopes had almost half of the service aces as she ended the night with five of the 11. Two ‘Cats had 10 or more digs in the win. Julie Francek led the way with 16 wile teammate Becca Feuerherd added 14.
Wolfe at the net had both block solos and added two block assists. Kalli Herron had a team-high four block assists. As a team NMU registered 15 block assists.
The ‘Cats have two more matches this weekend. Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State will pay a visit to Vandament Arena. Sunday (Oct. 24) will be the regular season finale against Grand Valley State at 2 p.m.
