Cross Country To Host U.P. Championships
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University cross country team will host the U.P. Championships Friday afternoon, Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. Running will take place at the NMU Golf Course. Men’s and women’s teams from NMU, Finlandia, Gogebic Community College, Lake Superior State, and Michigan Tech will compete.
Last week the Wildcats ran at the UW-Parkside Invitational where the team finished second behind Bellarmine. Christina (Gillis) Turman led the ‘Cats with an eighth-place showing (19:07.7).
This is the only opportunity the team will have a chance to run in front of the home crowd. Head coach Jenny Ryan is excited about running at home. “It is exciting to be at home and have the team race right here in town,” said Ryan. “I expect the team to race some fast 6K times, which is the distance they will be racing at conference and regionals.”
According to Ryan she hopes to see many of her runners at the top of the standings. NMU runners to watch include Nora Kiilunen, Rita Woitas, Kristen Schulz, Turman, Mandy Dye and Olivia Juntila.
After Friday’s event the ‘Cats will compete next at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Cross Country Championships which will be held at Hillsdale College (Nov. 6).
