No. 13 Volleyball at GLIAC/GLVC Crossover

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The No. 13 NMU volleyball team (15-0,11-0) heads to Aurora, Illinois this weekend to participate in the third annual Mizuno GLIAC/GLVC crossover tournament. 15 teams from both the GLIAC and GLVC conferences will participate. The ‘Cats play Rockhurst Friday afternoon, No. 19 Missouri-St. Louis Friday evening and No. 20 Indianapolis on Saturday.

The undefeated ‘Cats climbed a spot in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll this week to No. 13 after defeating Tiffin (3-1) on Friday and Ohio Dominican (3-0) Saturday.

Sami Veirk was named in the GLIAC North Division Weekly Honor Roll this week after she led the ‘Cats against the Dragons and Panther with 24 kills. She had a .268 attack percentage. Vierk is second on the team with 164 kills behind Ana Lopes (178). Setter Abby Lovell had 38 and 34 assists against Tiffin and Ohio Dominican. She has 486 this season.

NMU recorded 12 block assists against Ohio Dominican as Vierk led the team with four, she has 36 block assists on the season which leads the team. Vierk and Katie Twardzik each have 39 total blocks to share the team lead. Twardzik and Lopes each have nine block solos to share team honors. Kalli Herron registered four of the nine service aces against Ohio Dominican as she now has 10 on the season. Lopes leads the ‘Cats in the service aces category with 25.

Rockhurst (16-5, 5-3 GLVC) is in Kansas City, Missouri. The Hawks are led by Maggie McGovern’s 260 kills and 25 service aces. Rockhurst won eight in a row earlier this year but have dropped three of their last five.

Missouri-St. Louis is 14-3 and 7-1 in the GLVC. The Tritons have won four in a row and nine of their last 10. Weslie Gaff leads the Tritons with 163 kills.

Indianapolis (14-6, 6-2 GLVC) is led by Kristina Kerrigan’s 212 kills. The Greyhounds lost four matches in a row earlier this year but have won their last five.

The league coming away from the tournament with the most victories will claim the traveling trophy. The GLIAC has claimed the title in each of the first two years, including a 24-21 victory last year.

The GLVC and GLIAC are two of the premier NCAA Division II conferences in the country and feature strong volleyball programs. There are currently four teams from the two conferences recognized in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll.

The GLVC is a 16-member NCAA Division II conference with members in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin and is in its 33rd year of combining athletic and academic success at the NCAA Division II level.

No. 13 NMU plays Rockhurst Friday at 12:30 p.m., No. 19 Missouri-St. Louis Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. and No. 20 Indianapolis on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
