MARQUETTE, Mich. –The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the recipients of the September Athletes of the Month. Ana Lopes from the volleyball team was named the female winner while Carter Kopach a member of the football team picked-up the male award.
Lopes, a freshman from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, recorded 151 kills, 18 assists, 19 service aces and 14 total blocks (six solo and eight assisted) during the month. She began September by leading the Wildcats to four straight wins at the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open. She was named to the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open All-Tournament Team. Lopes was also named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week for her play at the tournament. Lopes over the four matches tallied 3.73 kill per set (56 kills) while hitting at a .226 clip. She averaged 3.13 digs per set (47 digs) recorded five assists, five blocks and two aces in helping the ‘Cats claim the tournament title.
Kopach, a junior from Bolingbrook, Ill, recorded 254 yards on the ground on 63 carries and threw for 770 yards on 54-98-3 during September. His total offense total for the month was 1,024 yards. Kopach had his hand in 13 touchdowns as he ran for five and threw for eight. Kopach was twice named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week during the month. He was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his play against the Findlay Oilers as he connected on 17-24 passes for 269 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for 44 yards and another score. The next week he picked up the honor again for his play against Northwood as he had 254 yards passing on 13-25 and two touchdowns, while rushing for a game-high 81 yards and two more scores against the Timberwolves.
