MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the second time in four days the Northern Michigan University hockey team will hit the ice to face its U.P. rival from the WCHA, Michigan Tech. The game is slated for Tuesday night (Oct. 12) at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena (4,200) with the puck dropping at 7:07 p.m. NMU enters the game at 0-2 while the Huskies are 2-0 after defeating Lake Superior Saturday night (6-2). The Wildcats lost to Minnesota-Duluth Saturday night (3-2).
Friday night (Oct. 8) MTU defeated NMU (4-3 OT) in the first game of the Superior Cup. The ‘Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Justin Florek and Tyler Gron. The Huskies tied the game at two-all with two power-play goals later in the first period. MTU took the 3-2 lead at 1:33 of the second period on a goal by Anthony Schooley. Andrew Cherniwchan tied the game once again at three-all with a goal at 13:27 of the third period. Bennett Royer scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies at 4:45 of the overtime period.
NMU is 62-48-12 all-time against MTU which includes a 26-25-7 record in Houghton. Over the past five games the ‘Cats are 1-3-1 against the Huskies and 2-2-1 in Houghton over the past five games. The second game of the home-and-home series will be played in Marquette before Christmas (Dec. 17).
There will be a fan bus going to the game in Houghton. The bus will leave at 2 p.m. from the parking lot east of the Berry Events Center. It includes a game ticket in the NMU section all for $30. The pregame meal will be at The Library (4-6 p.m.) with a return immediately after the game. A reservation for a seat on the bus can be made by contacting The Point (100.3 FM) at 906-225-0656.

After Tuesday’s game, NMU won’t be back in action until the weekend of Oct. 22-23 when the team opens up CCHA play at Miami. The home conference opener is the following week (Oct. 29-30) against Ohio State.
