Wildcats Defeated By Top Ranked Team

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Saturday night the Northern Michigan University football team was looking to get back on the winning side of things.  The opponent was the top ranked team in NCAA Division II football the Grand Valley State Lakers.  The Lakers scored 14 points in the first quarter added seven in the second for a 28-7 win.

The loss was NMU’s second in a row as they are now 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  GVSU improves to 6-0 and 5-0 respectively.

Andrew Lorman caught a nine-yard pass from Kyle McMahon with the good extra point the Lakers were upm7-0.  Norman Shuford scored the next two touchdowns for the home team.   His first score came on a four-yard run at 4:38 of the first quarter for a 14-0 score.  He then went in from a yard out at 13:01 of the second quarter for a 21-0 lead with both extra points good.

John Privitelli scored for NMU at 3:28 of the third quarter for a 21-7 score with the good extra point.  GVSU added another touchdown at 4:29 of the fourth quarter when Israel Woolfork hauled in a 14-yard pass from McMahon.  The extra point was good and that was how the scoring ended.

GVSU recorded 398 yards of total offense to 241 for the ‘Cats.  NMU recorded 101 yards rushing and 140 passing.  The Lakers tallied 315 yards on the ground and 83 in the air.

Phillipe Smith led the ‘Cats on the ground with 50 yards on 15 carries.  Carter Kopach was 6-14-0 for 91 yards.  Jacob Hicks threw his first passes of the season as he responded by going 5-11-0 for 49 yards.  Craig Thompson led NMU with three catches for 35 yards.

Eddie Knoblock led the NMU defense with 12  total tackles (three solo and nine assisted).

Justin Sherrod, from GVSU, led all ground gainers with 109 yards on 13 carries.  Shuford ended the night with 83 yards on 11 carries.  McMahon was 9-16-1 for 83 yards.

The ‘Cats will spend the next two Saturdays in the Superior Dome.  First up is an encounter with Ferris State next Saturday (Oct. 16) with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
