MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team will host this year’s installment of the Superior Cup. NMU will face Michigan Tech Friday (Oct. 8) and the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth Saturday night (Oct. 9). The puck will drop each night at 7:35 p.m. Lake Superior State is the fourth team involved with the Superior Cup as they host Minnesota-Duluth Friday and Michigan Tech Saturday. It is a battle of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) against the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).
Minnesota-Duluth was picked third in the WCHA coaches’ preseason poll while Michigan Tech was selected 12th. In the CCHA polls, NMU was tabbed sixth in the coaches’ poll and seventh in the media poll.
NMU is 3-3 in Superior Cup action entering the 2010 season. The first year of the series was during the 2007 season as NMU defeated MTU (3-2) and lost to Minnesota-Duluth (0-4). The next year in Marquette the ‘Cats defeated the Huskies (5-2) and lost to the Bulldogs (0-5). Last year on the road the ‘Cats lost to MTU (3-5) and defeated Minnesota-Duluth (3-1).
NMU is 62-47-12 all-time against Michigan Tech which includes a 34-18-5 slate in Marquette. Against the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth the ‘Cats are 33-32-4 all-time and 24-10-2 on home ice.
NMU played an exhibition game Sunday to warm-up for the regular season. The ‘Cats scored nine seconds into the game against Nipissing University and added another goal a little over a minute later (1:17) to take the game 11-0. Newcomer Erik Higby recorded three goals and four points in the win. Justin Florek and Andrew Cherniwchan each added two goals. Tyler Gron (1-3) and Florek (2-2) also had four points.
The ‘Cats after the weekend games will be back in action Tuesday night (Oct. 12) at Michigan Tech. Faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m.
