MARQUETTE, Mich. -The Northern Michigan University volleyball team (12-0, 8-0 GLIAC) looks to extend it’s undefeated streak with only one game this week against U.P. rival Michigan Tech (2-10, 1-7 GLIAC). They play the Huskies Friday (Oct. 1) for the second week in a row after the Wildcats won (3-1) in Houghton last Tuesday (Sept. 21).
The Wildcats also defeated Northwood (3-0) and Lake Superior State (3-1) at Vandament Arena last week. Sami Vierk was named in the GLIAC north division weekly honor roll after she led the ‘Cats in the three matches last week when she had 10 kills against Michigan Tech, 11 against Northwood and 17 against Lake Superior State.
Wins last week moved the Wildcats overall record to 12-0 and 8-0 in the GLIAC. The last time NMU was 12-0 was 2003 when the team finished 26-1. The AVCA ranks NMU #16 this week after receiving 344 points. Last week the Wildcats were #19 and #21 the week before.
Ana Lopes and Sami Vierk lead the team in kills with 151 and 117 respectively. Abby Lovell leads the team with 366 assists. Katie Twardzik leads the ‘Cats in block solos with nine. Vierk has a team-high 26 block assists while Twardzik leads the ‘Cats with 31 total blocks.
Michigan Tech is 2-10 and 1-7 in the GLIAC. The Huskies have lost three in a row and seven of the last eight. Kristine Sexton leads the Huskies with 116 kills on the year. Madeline Haben has tallied a team-best 304 assists this season and Tessa Mauer leads the Huskies with 134 digs.
Friday’s match time is set for 7:00 PM from Vandament Arena.
