MARQUETTE, Mich. –Homecoming weekend was very successful for NMU Wildcats sports. Soccer beat Saginaw Valley State on Friday, volleyball beat Northwood and Lake Superior State on Friday and Saturday and football beat Ashland Saturday. Soccer had to finish the weekend with a win Sunday afternoon.
The Northern Michigan Soccer team won their third game in a row and continued their unbeaten ways on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Northwood. The win moves NMU’s record to 5-0-3 and 5-0-1 in GLIAC play. Northwood’s record stands at 3-6 and 1-6 in the conference.
Dana Stephens scored her sixth goal of the season when she put away a pass from Becky Schmidt less than three minutes into the game. Jessica Baker did her part in goal to keep the score 1-0 going into halftime.
Kari Buckel scored an unassisted goal for her third of the season early in the second half to make it 2-0. Northwood hit the post on a shot and finally buried a goal as Amanda Watson scored to bring the Timberwolves within one. Watson came into the weekend leading the GLIAC in scoring.
The Wildcat defense held strong as Jessica Baker got the win recording 6 saves. Rebecca Lipinski had 9 saves for Northwood.
The GLIAC leading Wildcats hit the road next weekend for games at Lake Erie College and Ashland.
