MARQUETTE, Mich. –The #19 Northern Michigan University’s volleyball team had to recover from last night’s game and play a scrappy Lake Superior State team this afternoon. The Wildcats stayed undefeated at 12-0 and 8-0 in the GLIAC with a 3-1 victory over the Lakers. The Lakers move to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the GLIAC.
Both teams were coming off victories last night. The Wildcats beat Northwood and the Lakers beat Michigan Tech. Much like the ‘Cats last two games, they started slow. They battled hard to take the lead at 8-7 and never looked back to take set one 25-15.
The Lakers battled to win set two 23-25. They took the early lead and never gave it up to even the match before break.
Northern had six points in a row early in the third set. The Wildcats held on as Ana Lopes had two aces to finish off game three 25-18.
NMU flexed their muscles in set four 25-10 and showed why they are the #19 team in the nation. Senior captain Katie Twardzik had four kills and put all the momentum and the match in the home teams favor.
The Wildcats were led by Sami Vierk with 17 kills. Also, Emma Wolfe had 11, Kalli Herron had eight and Twardzik had six. Herron added 2 blocks. Abby Lovell did a great job again at setter recording 42 assists. Ana Lopes had nine digs while Kristin Wetzel had eight.
Lake Superior State was led by Abby Sherada’s 12 kills and Brittany Newberry’s 21 digs.
The Wildcats will try to continue their GLIAC dominance as they take on another U.P. rival, Michigan Tech. The Huskies come to town on Friday, October 1st. Match time is set for 7 PM.
