HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Michigan Tech Huskies gave the Northern Michigan University volleyball team a little bit of a scare Tuesday night in Houghton. MTU took the first set (22-25) before the Wildcats came back to take three in a row and the match (25-9, 25-22, 25-13). The win kept the 19th ranked ‘Cats perfect on the season at 10-0 overall and 6-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action. MTU falls to 2-8 and 1-5 GLIAC.
Three ‘Cats recorded 10 or more kills for the match. Leading the way was Ana Lopes with a match-high 13 kills. Emma Wolfe added 11 while teammate Sami Vierk chipped in with 10 kills. As a team the ‘Cats had a hitting percentage of .285 on 56 kills in 130 total attempts. NMU’s side out percentage for the match was 64 percent (45-70). In the fourth set the NMU side out percentage was 84 percent (11-13).
Abby Lovell recorded a match-high 37 assists to go along with her 10 digs on the defensive front. NMU as a team had nine service aces for the match as Lopes and Becca Feuerherd had three each. Lopes added 15 digs and two block assists. Kristin Wetzel had 10 digs while Vierk added two block assists. As a team the ‘Cats had 54 digs.
The ‘Cat come back home for two matches over the weekend. First up is a date with the Timberwolves of Northwood University Friday night (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. Saturday afternoon (Sept. 25) at 1:30 p.m. the Lakers of Lake Superior State will be the opponent.
