Volleyball Downs Ashland To Stay Perfect
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball squad won its ninth match in a row (9-0) to begin the 2010 season Saturday afternoon inside Vandament Arena. NMU took the first two sets of the match (25-21, 25-14) before dropping the third set (14-25). The Wildcats came back strong in the fourth set to take the match (25-19) over the Ashland Eagles. With the win the ‘Cats are now 5-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Ashland falls to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the GLIAC.
Sami Vierk led the ‘Cats in kills on the afternoon with nine. She had 20 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .250. Emma Wolfe added seven kills while teammate Kalli Herron added six. For the match the ‘Cats had 34 kills in 101 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .158. NMU’s side out percentage in the second set was 85 percent (12-14) while it was 78 percent in the fourth set (15-19).
Abby Lovell recorded 26 of the 32 assists for the match. She also added three digs and five block assists. Ana Lopes registered four of the six service aces, also had seven digs and a block solo. Kristin Wetzel led the ‘Cats on the defensive front with eight digs with teammate Becca Feuerherd adding seven.
NMU had 10 total team block for the afternoon (three block solos and 14 block assists). Vierk had four block assists while Herron added three. Katie Twardzik had two block solos and a block assist.
The ‘Cats have a busy week ahead. First up is a mid-week trip (Tuesday) to Houghton to take on the Michigan Tech Huskies (Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.). Then it is home again for two matches next weekend for Homecoming. Friday night (Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.) the ‘Cats take on Northwood then Saturday (Sept. 25 at 1:30 p.m.) the Lakers of Lake Superior State call on Vandament Arena.
