MARQUETTE, Mich. – Two of the Northern Michigan University athletic teams will be home this weekend. Volleyball and soccer both have two contests beginning Friday afternoon. Football looks to extend its winning ways on the road while golf tees it up for its second event of the season.
Soccer (2-0-2, 2-0-0 GLIAC) will get things started with a 4 p.m. game Friday (Sept. 17) against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Ferris State. After a day off the Wildcats host the Lakers of Grand Valley State Sunday (Sept. 19) at noon. Amelia Johnson was named this week’s GLIAC Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. The ‘Cats look to stay perfect in conference play.
Volleyball (7-0, 3-0 GLIAC) and ranked 21st in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll host GLIAC newcomer Lake Erie College Friday (Sept. 17) at 7 p.m. and then will turn around and face the Eagles of Ashland University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.). Two of NMU’s three wins last weekend came in five-set matches.
This week’s GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week Carter Kopach leads the NMU football team (1-1, 1-0 GLIAC) to Midland, Mich. to tangle with the Northwood University Timberwolves at noon Saturday (Sept. 18). NMU is looking to reverse its fortune on the road. In its only road game of the season so far the ‘Cats dropped a 7-6 decision to MSU-Mankato to open up the season two weeks ago.

The golf team will hit the links at the NCAA Division II Regional 1 Sunday and Monday (Sept. 19-20). South Haven, Mich. is the site of the tournament. The team played at the LSSU Men’s Invitational last weekend to open up its season.
Idle this week is the cross country team as they will be back in action next week (Sept. 25) at the Roy Griak Invitational which is held in the Twin Cities.
