MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball squad took its first road swing of the season this past weekend. NMU is coming home with a clean sweep of the weekend. Sunday afternoon the Wildcats took care of the Lakers of Grand Valley State in five sets (25-18, 14-25, 13-25, 25-23, 15-13). NMU defeated Ferris State and Saginaw Valley State also over the weekend. NMU stays perfect on the season with a 7-0 overall slate and a 3-0 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. The Lakers fall to 2-4 and 1-1 respectively.
Ana Lopes led the ‘Cats again in the kills department with a match-high 22. She had 66 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .182. Sami Vierk was the only other ‘Cat with 10 or more kills on the afternoon as she ended the match with an even 10 kills. As a team the ‘Cats recorded 57 kills in 194 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .139.
NMU’s side out percentage in the fourth and fifth sets were 60 (14-23) and 53 percent (7-13) respectively. Abby Lovell tallied a match-high 45 assists. Lopes added four service aces while teammate Becca Feuerherd added three.
On the defensive end of things three ‘Cats had 20 or more digs for the match. Kristin Wetzel led the way with 22 as she was followed by Feuerherd with 21 and Lopes added 20. At the net the ‘Cats recorded two block solos and 12 block assists. Katie Twardzik and Sarah Hamilton each had three block assists.
NMU will play two matches at home next weekend. Lake Erie visits Vandament Arena Friday, Sept. 17 for a 7 p.m. showdown. The next day the Ashland Eagles face the ‘Cats (Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.).
