Soccer 'Cats Hold On For Win
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Dana Stephens scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to lead the Northern Michigan University soccer team to a hard fought 1-0 victory over Ohio Dominican Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field. With the win the Wildcats improve to 2-0-2 overall and 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. The Panthers fall to 3-1 and 1-1 respectively.
Stephens scored the lone goal of the game at 84:12 on an assist from Kari Buckel. Stephens and Amelia Johnson have scored all of NMU’s goals so far this season. Johnson is second on the team with three goals. Buckel currently has six of the nine assists on the season.
Jessica Baker with the shutout had 14 saves on the day. Ohio Dominican had two corners kicks while the ‘Cats did not register a corner kick. NMU ended the contest with 12 shots with eight being on-goal. The Panthers had 17 shots with 14 on-goal.
The ‘Cats continue with its home stand next week. First up is a Friday afternoon (Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.) game against Ferris State. Then on Sunday (Sept. 19 at noon) the ‘Cats host the Lakers of Grand Valley State.
