Volleyball Extened To Five Sets, But Still Perfect

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball squad just keeps on rolling along.  Today at Saginaw Valley State the Wildcats picked up its sixth victory of the season in as many outings.  NMU defeated the Cardinals in five sets (25-19, 17-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-13).  The ‘Cats are still perfect at 6-0 and 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Saginaw Valley State falls to 3-3 and 1-1 respectively.

Three ‘Cats recorded over 10 kills for the match.  Leading the way was Ana Lopes with 20 kills in 56 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .196.  Sami Vierk added 13 while Emma Wolfe had 10 kills.  For the match the ‘Cats recorded 65 kills in 181 total attempts for a .149 hitting percentage. 

Once again the ‘Cats side out percent was over 60 percent for the sets they won.  NMU’s side out percentage in the first set was 60 percent (12-20), the third set was 60 percent (15-25) and the fifth set was 69 percent (9-13).

Abby Lovell tallied 53 assists of the team’s 61 on the afternoon.  On the defensive front the ‘Cats were led by Kristin Wetzel with 19 digs, adding 15 was Becca Feuerherd while teammate Lopes recorded 14.  Vierk led the ‘Cats at the net with two block assists.

The ‘Cats final stop on the three-match road swing is tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.) at Grand Valley State.
