Volleyball Stays Perfect
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team for the first time this season ventured out of Marquette with a match at Ferris State Friday night. It was also the season-opener in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play for both squads. NMU began the season at 4-0 with all the wins coming at the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open last weekend.
NMU took the first two sets (25-15, 25-20) before dropping the third set to the Bulldogs (23-25). But the Wildcats held on to take the fourth set and the match (25-23). With the win the ‘Cats stay perfect on the season at 5-0 and 1-0 in GLIAC action. Ferris falls to 3-2 and 0-1 respectively.
Ana Lopes led the ‘Cats on the night with 16 kills. She was the only member of the team with 10 or more kills. This week’s GLIAC North Division Volleyball Player of the Week had 44 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .250. Sami Vierk was next on the kills list with nine. As a team the ‘Cats had 43 kills in 130 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .154. In all three sets the ‘Cats won the side out percentage was over 50 percent. The first set was 56 percent; set two was 55 percent while the fourth set was 52 percent. In the only set the ‘Cats dropped the side out percentage was 41 percent.
Abby Lovell recorded 26 assists. Six of NMU’s eight service aces came from Kristin Wetzel and Becca Feuerherd with three each. Lopes also added 11 digs and a block assist. Wetzel also had 11 digs on the defensive front. Vierk recorded four total blocks for the match with a block solo and three block assists. For the match NMU had 10 block assists.
The ‘Cats stay on the road for its next two matches at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.) and then to wrap-up the weekend road swing the team is at Grand Valley State Sunday (Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.).
