MARQUETTE, Mich. –With the beginning of the academic year that means one thing, it is time for Northern Michigan University athletic teams to begin competing. This week the football and volleyball teams begin the athletic schedule with events Thursday (Sept. 2). Friday (Sept. 3) the cross country team hits the trail for the first time this season. The final team to begin play this week is the soccer squad Saturday (Sept. 4) afternoon.
The NMU football team travels to Minnesota to take on MSU-Mankato in a non-conference game to open the season for both squads. NMU is coming off a 6-4 campaign in 2009. The Wildcats were picked seventh in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) preseason poll. The Mavericks currently ranked 18thin the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Coaches’ Poll (Aug. 30) are coming off a 10-2 record for the 2009 season.

Also getting underway Thursday night is the NMU volleyball squad as they host the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open. The ‘Cats were selected third in the GLIAC North Division in preseason voting by the conference coaches. NMU faces Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening match of the weekend at 7 p.m. Friday (Sept. 3) the ‘Cats face Winona State at 7 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 4) the ‘Cats have two matches that day as they face Minnesota-Crookston at 12:30 p.m. and American International at 7 p.m.

Jenny Ryan takes the NMU cross country team to the U.P. Collegiate Opener Friday (Sept. 3) afternoon as the event will be held at Michigan Tech. The team is a mix of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers.
The final team to begin its season is the soccer squad as they face Concordia-St. Paul Saturday (Sept. 4) at noon on the NMU Soccer Field. Matt Granstrand’s squad will be young and untested early on, but it has the potential to have a successful season.
