MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team played the annual Green and Gold match Friday night at Vandament Arena.  The Green squad took the match in three straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-14).

Newcomer Ana Lopes led the Green with eight kills in 16 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .375.  Right behind her was Sami Vierk with seven kills in nine total attempts (.778).  As a team the Green had 34 kills in 59 total attempts for a hitting percentage of.441.

Abby Lovell had 24 of the 33 assists for the Green to go along with her two service aces, two block solos and a block assist.  Kristin Wetzel registered six of the 15 digs on the night.  Vierk added four block assists in the win.

Two newcomers led the Gold team.  Ellen Lemos and Kalli Herron each had seven kills.  Herron recorded 21 total attempts (.095) while Lemos had 11 (.545).  As a team the Gold had 31 kills in 65 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .231. 

Libby Woodford had 15 of the 27 assists to lead the Gold.  Andree Ring recorded five of the 12 digs.  Brittany Covert had two block assists at the net.

The Wildcats begin the 2010 season Thursday night (Sept. 2) against Wisconsin-Parkside at 7 p.m. in the first match of the Superior Oasis Wildcat Open.  Action continues Friday (Sept. 3) and Saturday (Sept. 4).  Other teams include American International, Lake Superior State, Minnesota-Crookston and Winona State.
