MARQUETTE, Mich. – Three more Northern Michigan University athletic teams report this weekend to begin preparations for their respective seasons. Cross country, soccer and volleyball will report to campus over the weekend.
The volleyball squad coming off a 19-12 slate from 2009 which included an 11-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Competition begins with a scrimmage against Lake Superior State Aug. 21 in Vandament Arena. That will be followed up by the annual Green and Gold Match Aug. 27 (7 p.m.). After a quick trip to Minnesota-Duluth for another scrimmage (Aug. 28), NMU begins for real the weekend of Sept. 2-4 with the Wildcat Open. NMU faces Wisconsin-Parkside Sept. 2 and Winona State Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. each night. To wrap up the event the Wildcats play two matches the final day (Sept. 4) against Minnesota-Crookston (12:30 p.m.) and American International (7 p.m.).
NMU soccer went 10-9-1 in 2009 as they were 7-6-1 in GLIAC action. The ‘Cats host Lewis in an exhibition match Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. NMU opens the season against Concordia-St. Paul Sept. 5 at noon. The ‘Cats will not leave the U.P. during the first month of the season. NMU travels to Houghton to take on Michigan Tech Sept. 8 (7 p.m.) for the first time ever in a varsity soccer match. The ‘Cats will then play six straight at home. First off is a match against Minnesota-Duluth (Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.), Ohio Dominican (Sept. 12 at 1 p.m.), Ferris State (Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.), Grand Valley State (Sept. 19 at noon), Saginaw Valley State (Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.) and Northwood (Sept. 26 at noon).
Jenny Ryan welcomes the NMU cross country team back to campus. The ‘Cats placed seventh at last year’s GLIAC Cross Country Championships. The ‘Cats will not have to go far for its first two competitions of the season. First on the schedule is the U.P. Collegiate Opener at Michigan Tech Sept. 3. The ‘Cats take to the trails for the Lake Superior State Invite the following week (Sept. 11). NMU will host its lone event of the season the U.P. Championships Oct. 22.
