MARQUETTE, Mich. – A total of nine hockey players with ties to the Northern Michigan University program have been attending NHL prospects camps this summer.
Current NMU players who have attended prospects camps include Kyle Follmer who was at the Chicago Blackhawks prospects camp. Justin Florek skated at the Boston Bruins prospects camp. Attending the Washington Capitals prospects camp was Andrew Cherniwchan. Greger Hanson was one of three Wildcats at the Philadelphia Flyers prospects camp.
Two former NMU players also in Philadelphia were Erik Gustafsson and Brian Stewart. Ray Kaunisto was at the LA Kings prospects camp.
Two incoming players attended prospect camps. Forward Reid Seckel was at the Detroit Red Wings prospects camp while defenseman CJ Ludwig was in the Dallas Stars prospects camp.
The NMU players with eligibility remaining may attend the prospects camps without running into trouble with the NCAA. According to NCAA rules an individual who has eligibility remaining may participate in a combine with a professional athletics team at any time, provided the individual does not miss any class time. The individual may receive actual and necessary expenses in conjunction with one 48-hour combine per professional team. The 48-hour period shall begin at the time the individual arrives at the combine location. At the completion of the 48-hour period, the individual must depart the location of the tryout immediately in order to receive return transportation expenses.
“This is the largest number of players we have ever had attend these camps through the course of a given summer,” said Walt Kyle, the head hockey coach at NMU. “To a large degree it was because of the success we had last year. We are very proud of these guys. We hope down the line these camps not only present opportunities for development, but opportunities to play professional hockey for these players.”
