USOEC Athletes Earn Medals Abroad
MARQUETTE – Two United States Olympic Education Center athletes medaled in their respective sports in international competition on July 4.
Freestyle wrestler Erin Golston placed first at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Golston (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) defeated teammate Patricia Martin (USA) in the championship round to take gold in the 43 kilogram division. Her gold medal helped Team USA tally 55 points to earn the team title. Team Ontario placed second with 34 points.
USOEC weightlifter Allie Henry earned bronze in the 69 kg division at the World University Championships in Taichung City, Chinese Taipei. Henry (River Falls, Wis.) snatched a personal best of 80 kg and lifted 90 kg in the clean and jerk for a personal-best total of 170 kg.
“That was the biggest event I’ve competed in and I didn’t let myself get too nervous. I’ve been off with my snatch in competition lately, but I stayed calm and did my best,” said Henry.
Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) placed fourth in the 105+ kg division a day later. He snatched 150 kg and lifted 200 kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 350 kg.
