MARQUETTE, Mich. – Troy Mattson, the head women’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University, announces the hiring of Carly Benson to the position of full-time assistant women’s basketball coach. She replaces Brigitte LaPointe who resigned. Benson was a graduate assistant with the NMU women’s basketball team during the 2009-10 season.
She was a member of the women’s basketball team (2005-09) at the University of Michigan. Benson earned four letters for the Wolverines and scored 1,020 points while starting 98 games. She was an All-Big Ten third team (coaches) selection for the 2007-08 season.
“Carly will be a great addition to the NMU women’s basketball coaching staff,” said Mattson. “She (Carly) will bring a lot of energy and knowledge to practice and game situations.”
While at Michigan, Benson was an Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree in 2008-09. She was named Michigan’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree in 2007 and 2009. Benson was named the UM athletic academic achievement award winner in 2009.
During her high school career at Carney-Nadeau, she was a four-time letterwinner and scored 1,864 points to become the school’s all-time leader in scoring. Benson was a starter on the Class D state championship team as a freshman. She finished third in voting for Michigan Miss Basketball as a senior and was the Class D player of the year as a junior and senior. She was a two-time all-state selection.
Father, Ed, played basketball at NMU while brother, Jared, currently plays for the Wildcats. Benson graduated from UM with a bachelor’s degree in English (2009) and is currently working on a master’s in public administration at NMU.
