BAY CITY, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Athletic Department has been awarded the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) “Community Engagement” award for the 2009-10 academic year. This is the second year the conference has given out the award; Saginaw Valley State won the inaugural award last year.
NMU won the award for the Fall Sports Kickoff. The event was held before the football game against Tiffin University Sept.12, 2009. NMU received the NCAA Division II Community Engagement Award of Excellence for 2008 for hosting a similar event.
The Fall Sports Kickoff was a free event open to the public which consisted of fun, food and entertainment. Activities included pony rides, inflatable games, a dunk tank and carnival games. The public was encouraged to stay and attend the football game between the Wildcats and Dragons.
NMU student-athletes and coaches were on hand to mingle with the p8blic. The community engagement spotlight benefitted the United Way of Marquette County. NMU Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports along with Econo Foods, TCF Campus Banking, WLUC TV-6, The Mining Journal and The Point were partners in this community engagement event.
NMU will receive a check for $1,000 for winning the award at the GLIAC June Executive Council Meeting. Part of the criteria for the award was how the event brought people together. The GLIAC Staff selected the winner.
