NMU Women's Nordic Ski Awards

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s Nordic ski team announces its awards for the 2009-10 season.
Laura DeWitt was named the MVP of the team. She was an NCAA All-American with an eighth-place finish in the 5K classic at the NCAA Skiing Championships. The Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Female Athlete of the Year also placed 12th in the 15K freestyle race at the NCAA Skiing Championships. She won the 5K classic race at the NCAA Regional. DeWitt was recently named the NMU Female Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.   
Picking up the Freshman of the Year Award was Monica Markvardsen. At the NCAA Skiing Championships she placed 14th in the 15K freestyle and 24thin the 5K classic. At the NCAA Regional she was second in the 10K freestyle and third in the 5K classic.     
Christina Gillis took home the Most Improved Skier Award. She won the 10K freestyle race and was second in the 5K classic race at the NCAA Regional.   Skiing at the NCAA Skiing Championships, Gillis was 34th in the 15K freestyle and 37th in the 5K classic races.
The Team Choice Award went to Ann Berglund. She was 20th in the 10K freestyle race and 37th in the 5K classic at the NCAA Regional.
Ingrid Fjeldheim and Gillis were named captains for the 2010-11 squad.
