MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team held its annual award banquet recently and the following awards were given.
Steffani Stoeger was named the MVP of the 2009-10 women’s basketball team. She was second on the team in scoring by averaging 10.4 ppg. The junior from Hortonville, Wis. led the Wildcats in assists (87) and steals (40). She was a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) all-conference women’s basketball team as a second team selection. Stoeger was also picked for the GLIAC Women’s Basketball All-Tournament Team.
Named the Playmaker of the Year was Mariah Dunham. She led the 2009-10 ‘Cats in the scoring column by averaging 14.1 ppg and was second in rebounds with 145 (5.2 rpg) and blocks (26). Dunham, the senior from Watertown, Wis., was also a second team all-conference selection and a member of the GLIAC Women’s Basketball All-Tournament Team.
Elicia Derusha took home two awards. She walked away with the Newcomer of the Year and the Rebound Awards. The sophomore from Escanaba, Mich. led the ‘Cats off the glass with 190 rebounds (5.9 rpg) which ranked her ninth in the conference. She also had 30 assists and 32 steals for the 2009-10 campaign.
The Free Throw Award went to Hillary Bowling. She converted 80.4 percent of her free throws during the 2009-10 season (45-56). Kellie Rietveld was the recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year Award. She recorded 31 steals and 111 rebounds (3.5 rpg) during the past season. The final award was given to Holly Cole as she took home the Coach’s Award. She was 31-75 (41.3 percent) from the three-point line for the 2009-10 season.
