Several Wildcats Shine In Multi-Events

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s outdoor track and field team competed at the Bulldog Invitational Saturday which was held at Ferris State University. No team score was kept at the invitational. Catherine Angeli, Bailey Franklin, Angela Leckson and Krista Squiers turned in impressive multi-event performances. 
Angeli won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.71. Teammates Alyssa Erspamer (13.14) and Brittnee Balbierz (13.18) were fifth and sixth respectively. Angeli (25.86) came back in the 200 with a second-place showing as she just missed first place by .01 to Kayla Vallar from Grand Valley State (25.85). Balbierz was fifth (26.98). Becky Rotter with a time of 1:02.12 was ninth in the 400. 
The 800 run saw Wildcat Maegan Hendershot run a 2:20.79 which was good fourth place. Franklin tied for sixth in the 100 hurdles as she crossed the finish line with a time of 16.14 with teammate Melissa Christensen eighth (16.75). Kristen Schulz ran an 11:49.82 in the 3,000 steeplechase for a fifth-place finish. 
The 4x100 relay of Balbierz, Erspamer, Christensen and Angeli ran a 49.06 for second in the event. Grand Valley State won the event with a time of 48.40. NMU had two relays in the 4x400 which finished in the top six. The “A” relay of Balbierz, Rachel Williams, Erin VanEnkevort and Angeli were second (4:10.62). Erspamer, Hendershot, Colby West and Brooke Granquist formed the “B” relay which ran a 4:22.14 for sixth place.
 The field events saw Franklin captured the high jump (5-03.00) with teammate Kayleigh Coulson tied for sixth (5-01.00). Karin Diebold with a measurement of 10-06.00 placed third in the pole vault. Franklin picked up another win this time it was in the long jump (17-05.25). Two other ‘Cats were in the top 10 as Christensen (15-10.50) and Granquist (15-08.25) were sixth and seventh respectively. Franklin was second in the triple jump (36-11.50). 
The throwing events saw Leckson third in the shot put (42-04.75) and Squiers eighth in the discus (118-06). Squiers also competed in the javelin where she won the event with a throw of 114-03 with teammate Leckson second (111-07). Squiers in the hammer was third (166-07).
The team’s next stop is in Midland, Mich. this coming week. NMU will compete at the Northwood Multi events April 15 and the Northwood Invitational April 17.
