MARQUETTE, Mich. –The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team concluded the 2009-10 campaign with an overall record of 22-10 and 16-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), for second in the North Division. NMU finished the season with a 59-51 loss to Drury University in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Midwest Regional.

Twice during the season, the Wildcats put together a string of eight wins in nine games.   The ‘Cats were 10-3 at the Berry Events Center during the season. NMU lost to Michigan Tech on its home court in the GLIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship Game (73-69). The ‘Cats defeated Ashland at home (71-50) and Findlay (71-64) on a neutral floor to reach the title game.         

Mariah Dunham and Steffani Stoeger led the team in the scoring column for the season averaging 14.1 ppg and 10.4 ppg respectively.  Elicia Derusha’s 190 rebounds led the team off the glass as she averaged almost six rebounds an outing (5.9 rpg). Dunham made more field goals than any other ‘Cat with 147 while shooting nearly 44 percent from the field (43.9). Christa Erickson was the top three-point shooter as she shot 43 percent from behind the arc and made 78 three’s. Dunham attempted 115 free throws and converted 88 of her throws (76.5 percent).  Stoeger led NMU in three other categories assists (87), minutes played (32.5 avg.) and steals (40).  Angie Leckson would be the team leader in blocks with 27.

 Dunham, Erickson and Stoeger  were named to the GLIAC All-Conference Second Team. In addition, Dunham and Stoeger were both named to the GLIAC Women’s Basketball All-Tournament Team. The duo were also named  the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week during the season.
