MARQUETTE –Twenty-eight wrestlers from the United States Olympic Education Center will be competing for a national title at the ASICS University National Championship Thursday through Sunday, April 8-11, in Akron, Ohio. The USOEC Greco-Roman team will have 20 wrestlers and the freestyle squad eight athletes competing.
The competition is double elimination with a random draw, although wrestlers from the same club will not compete against each other.
Greco-Roman wrestler and Northern Michigan University senior Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) is planning to use this tournament as a practice for the U.S. National Championships that take place at the end of the month. “I’m really hoping this will be a warm-up tournament, and a jump start to get my weight down for nationals,” he said.
Others from the squad expected to potentially medal, according to Coach Dennis Hall are:junior Aaron Briggs (Tuscon, Az.), seniors Andrew Bisek (Chaska, Minn.), Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.) and Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.)
Freestyle coach Shannyn Gillespie is looking forward to the event, anticipating strong showings from several of his team members, includingsophomore Emily Martin (Frisco, Texas) and senior Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis).
“This is the beginning of the championship season; we have been looking forward to this part of the season all year,” Gillespie said. “The athletes are hungry and ready to compete. I’m excited to see what they will show.”
