Weightlifting wood-cut outs available for painting

MARQUETTE—  Wooden weightlifting barbells are now available through the Marquette Arts and Culture Center for painting and will be used to decorate downtown Marquette and promote the upcoming National Collegiate Weightlifting Championships hosted by the United States Olympic Education Center, April 16-18.
In the past wooden cut-outs have been used to welcome athletes, coaches and fans for speedskating events hosted by the USOEC. In keeping with tradition, the city of Marquette wants to welcome the sport of weightlifting to the area, along with the new coaches, athletes and fans of the sport by offering free barbell cut outs for organizations and individuals to paint/decorate/embellish.   Only 40 are available, so organizations and individuals are encouraged to pick them up at the City of Marquette Arts and Culture Center located in the lower level of the Peter White Public Library, free of charge, as soon as possible. The Arts Center is open for barbell pick up Monday-Thursday 2-6 p.m., Friday 1-6 p.m., and Saturday 1-5 p.m. Call 228-0472 for more information. Deadline for the finished product is April 6, 2010 by 5 p.m. so hurry in now to get started!
Arts Administration Director for the City of Marquette Nikke Nason said, “The community arts projects not only bring visibility to the events themselves but also highlight the spirit of the Marquette community to visitors and guests.”
This is the first time the USOEC has dedicated an event solely to weightlifting, and community members, businesses and students are invited to partake in showing the nation, once again, Marquette’s Olympic spirit.
USOEC Director Jeff Klienschmidt said, “Marquette’s support for USOEC events has been overwhelming, and I’m looking forward to seeing the enthusiasm again. We would like to thank the Arts and Culture Center and the Downtown Development Authority for their help with this project.”
