MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off its 2010 spring schedule last week (March 20) with matches against Lake Superior State and a NMU alumni team. NMU defeated the Lakers in three straight (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) and lost to the alumni team in five sets (23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 10-15). After the matches the team held its annual banquet.
According to Dominic Yoder, the head coach of the NMU volleyball team; it was a great weekend of competition for our family, friends, past alumni and current team. “The alumni team was very competitive, with eight returning alumni players who were once All-GLIAC in one way or another, they proved to still have the Wildcat competitive spirit,” said Yoder. “It really gave our current returners, who are mostly freshman, very strong competition to compete against.”
Yoder stated, Lake Superior State brought a similar young team that the Wildcat volleyball team showed great individual success against.
This weekend (March 27) will prove to be stronger competition and a challenge for the Wildcat volleyball team as they head to UW-Green Bay to play four matches against UWGB, UM-Duluth and two UWGB alumni teams.
The Wildcat volleyball banquet also took place March 20, seeing the 2009 team (second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance) and five seniors being honored (Katt Garvick, Mandie Meyer, Cassie Osiecki, Rachel Green and Amy Andersen-Goldsworthy).
Awards were distributed, team Captain Awards went to Garvick and Meyer. Most Improved Player went to Andersen-Goldsworthy. MVP was earned by Meyer (second consecutive year). The team also received the 2009 AVCA Team Academic Award as well as the Wildcats placed eight volleyball student-athletes on the All-GLIAC Academic Team.
