MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announces the athletes of the month for December, January and February.
George Cartwright from the Nordic ski team and Krista Squiers from the indoor track and field team were the male and female athletes of the month for December. Cartwright placed third at Michigan Tech Challenge in the 10K freestyle event (30:36.3) and fifth in the 10K classic race (32:22.6). In track’s only competition during the month of December, Squiers won the weight throw at the St. Scholastica Mini-Meet with a measurement of 56-08.75.
For the month of January the student-athletes selected were Brian Stewart from the hockey team and Steffani Stoeger from the women’s basketball team. Stewart for the month went 4-2-3 with a 2.17 goal-against average and a .931 save-percentage. He was named the MVP of the Dodge Holiday Classic and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Goaltender of the Week for his performance in Minneapolis. Stewart shutout Clarkson with 29 saves and then defeated Minnesota as he recorded 48 saves in the 4-2 win. Stoeger averaged 15.0 ppg and 4.4 rpg during the month. She was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week for her performance against Findlay where she had 21 points and was 13-17 from the free throw line. Against Hillsdale that week she had another 21-point performance as she was 5-6 from beyond the arc.
Mark Olver from the hockey team and Bailey Franklin from the indoor track and field team were selected for February. Olver had 15 points during the month on six goals and nine assists. He was named the CCHA Player of the Month. This is the second time; Olver has received this honor in his career. He led the Wildcats to a 6-1-1 record for the month as he averaged 1.88 points per game as he had at least one point in each game during the month. NMU began the month in 10th place in the CCHA standings as the team finished the month in fourth place. Franklin’s month was highlighted by her winning the triple jump (36-11.00), second in the indoor pentathlon (3,295 points) and eighth in the long jump (16-05.75) at the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Also during the month, she won the triple jump (36-9) and the indoor pentathlon (3,136 points) at the Pointer Invitational.
