Three Senior Days Saturday At The Berry
MARQUETTE, Mich. – You will have two more chances to see your Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s basketball and hockey teams this week as they wrap up the 2009-10 regular season and celebrate Senior Day Saturday (Feb. 27). You can catch three games for the price of one with the special ticket offer.
Action gets rolling Thursday (Feb. 25) as the NMU women’s basketball team (17-8, 14-6 GLIAC) host the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p. m. at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats will look to rebound from a 55-44 defeat to Findlay last Saturday as they are tied with Grand Valley State for second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division. The ‘Cats are also looking to snap a two-game losing skid.
Also Thursday the Wildcat men’s basketball team (10-14, 7-13 GLIAC) takes on the Cardinals at approximately 7:30 p.m. NMU is coming off a 75-56 setback to Findlay. The ‘Cats will look to get back to its winning ways as they are currently on a three- game losing streak.
Friday (Feb. 26) will begin with the Blue Line Luncheon at the Holiday Inn at 11:30 a.m. which is open to the public. The luncheon will preview the NMU hockey (15-11-8, 11-9-6-3 CCHA) series against the Lake Superior State Lakers. Scheduled to speak will be the NMU seniors along with NMU head coach Walt Kyle. The cost of the luncheon will be $10 per person.
Later on that day, the Wildcats will have a silent auction night as they host the Lakers. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. The Wildcats are coming into the game with a series split against Michigan last week winning Friday, 3-1, and losing, 5-4, Saturday. The ‘Cats will look forward to close the regular season on a strong note as they will try to beat the Lakers for the first time this season. The teams met in a series Dec. 11-12 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. where the Lakers swept the ‘Cats, 5-1 and 6-3.
NMU will have a three-for- one special for all three games Saturday (Feb. 27). All fans with a ticket for Wildcat hockey game Saturday night ($15) are able to attend both women’s and men’s basketball games at no charge. You will need to show your hockey ticket to the ticket attendant for free admission.
Saturday will be buzzing with Senior Day festivities for both basketball teams as the seniors will play their final regular season home game on the Berry Events Center hardwood. Arrive at the game early to salute your Wildcat seniors. Both teams will host the Lake Superior State Lakers. Tipoff is scheduled for the women at 11 a.m. followed by the men at approximately 1 p.m.
Later on Saturday another Senior Day celebration at The Berry will take place as the Wildcat hockey seniors will take their turn against the Lakers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. Senior hockey trading cards will be given out before the game. Downtown Eye Care along with the Marquette County Humane Society is sponsoring an event before Saturday’s hockey game where individuals can drop off canned cat food, safe cat and dogs treats, safe dog toys and monetary donations at the entrances.
Immediately after Saturday’s hockey game, there will be a fourth period reception at Casa Calabria sponsored by Casa Calabria, Houle and Associates and American Financial-Doug Garrow.
The Wildcat track and field team is the lone squad on the road this weekend (Feb. 26-27) as they travel to Allendale, Mich. (Grand Valley State) to compete at the GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The ’Cats are coming off a strong finish at the Lake Superior Challenge (Feb. 13).
