HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s Nordic ski team had the top three finishers Sunday in the 10K freestyle race at the NCAA Regional Championships. NMU recorded 87 points in the team standings as Alaska was second (74). For the two days of racing (classic and freestyle) the Wildcats tallied 174 team points to claim team honors with the Nanooks second (145).
Christina Gillis was the top finisher of the race Sunday as she had a time of 30:20.8. Monica Markvardsen (30:25.6) and Laura DeWitt (30:26.1) were the next two skiers to cross the finish line. Two spots back in fifth was teammate Marie Helen Soderman (30:31.1).
Ingrid Fjeldheim placed 13th (31:22.2) in the event with Libby Ellis (31:30.1) 15th. Anna Bergland (32:24.2) finished 20th and Karmen Whitham (32:48.7) 27th for the ‘Cats.
The team will have a couple of weeks off before competing again at the NCAA Skiing Championships March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
