HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team had three of the top seven skiers Sunday in the 15K freestyle race at the NCAA Regional Championships. NMU scored 79 team points which was 16 more than second place Michigan Tech (63). For the two-day combined total (classic and freestyle) the ‘Cats tallied 159 points to take team honors with the Huskies 20 points back (139).
George Cartwright won the freestyle race with a time of 39:42.8 which was about 15 seconds over the second-place finisher. Two other NMU skiers were in the mix as Chris Bowler (40:06.6) and Kevin Cutts (40:06.9) were sixth and seventh respectively. Tim Cook was outside a top 10 finish as he was 12th with a time of 40:58.7. Down the finish list was Ben Hugus 31st as he covered the course with a time of 43:07.8.
The team will have a couple of weeks off before competing again at the NCAA Skiing Championships March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
