NMU Women Skiers Take Top Three Spots In Classic

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The first day of the NCAA Central Regional Cross Country Skiing Championships is history. The Northern Michigan University women’s Nordic ski team had the top three skiers in the 5K classic race to take team honors. NMU recorded 87 points with Alaska second (71).
NMU skier Laura DeWitt crossed the finish line first as she covered the course with a time of 16:59.1. The next two skiers both from NMU were a little more than two seconds back. Christina Gillis was second (17:00.1) while Monica Markvardsen third (17:01.4). In sixth place was Marie Helen Soderman (17:22.1). 
Libby Ellis with a time of 18:25.0 was 19th. Ingrid Fjeldheim finished 23rd (18:36.2) in the event. The next NMU skier to cross the finish line was Karmen Whitham in 30th (19:02.5). Anna Bergland finished in the 37th spot with a time of (19:24.8). 
 The second day of the regional championships will be Sunday (Feb. 21) with the freestyle race.
