HILLSDALE, Mich. – Down by four points at the half (34-30) the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team shot under 39 percent (12-31, 38.7 percent) in the second half and dropped the Thursday night game to the Hillsdale College Chargers by a score of 81-59.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-13 overall on the season and 7-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Hillsdale improves to 11-12 and 11-8 respectively.
NMU trailed the first 12 minutes of the game. The ‘Cats did have the game to within two points (10-8) at 14:40 on a lay-up by Mylan Murphy. Over the next seven minutes the ‘Cats used a 10-7 run to take the lead 18-17 with a little under eight minutes to go in the half. With 5:13 showing on the clock, Raymont McElroy sank a three-pointer for a 23-22 game in favor of the ‘Cats. In the blink of an eye the ‘Cats were facing a deficit of 31-23 with under three minutes to go. NMU ended the half with four free throws from Chris Warner.
Coming back out for the second half the ‘Cats used a 7-4 run to take a 37-36 lead on a McElroy three-point play (18:26). Hillsdale used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take command of the game (45-37). Marc Renelique hit a three-pointer for a 45-40 score at 13:44. After a Charger three-pointer, Renelique drained a jumper for a 48-42 game. With less than 10 minutes to go in the game the home team had built a 10-point cushion. NMU would get to within 10 points at 5:46 after two free throws from McElroy. That would be as close as the ‘Cats got on the night.
McElroy poured in a team-high 21 points for the ‘Cats. Murphy was the other ‘Cat in double-figures as he ended the game with 10 points. Nick Washburn led the Chargers with 21 points. Warner ended the game with 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals.
NMU was 22-61 from the floor (36.1 percent). From the arc the ‘Cats were 6-19 (31.6 percent) as Renelique and McElroy had two triples each. Trips to the free throw line saw the ‘Cats go 9-12 (75 percent). The home team had an edge off the glass (40-33).
The ‘Cats go over the border and into Ohio to take on the Findlay Oilers Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20).
