Wildcats Drop Game To Ferris State
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team had a rough Saturday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. Trailing by a score of 42-27 at the half against the Ferris State Bulldogs the Wildcats dropped the game 90-76.
The defeat drops the ‘Cats to 10-12 overall on the season and 7-11 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Ferris State improves to 14-9 and 12-6 respectively.
Jared Benson’s jumper at 14:46 of the first half gave NMU a 12-11 lead. Marc Renelique’s three-pointer gave the ‘Cats a 15-12 advantage at 14:13. With a little under 11 minutes left in the half Raymont McElroy gave the ‘Cats the lead once again (20-19). Ferris took over the lead from that point in the half. McElroy had the ‘Cats to within one (23-22) at the eight minute mark. From that point the ‘Cats only scored five points the rest of the half.
The second half saw the Bulldogs jump all over the ‘Cats to take a 20-point lead a little more than five minutes into the the second 20 minutes of play (57-37). Renelique’s three-pointer at 12:23 had the ‘Cats down 64-48. Over a span of about two minutes Renelique connected on back-to-back baskets for an 86-70 score. Alex Sabino-Ifill scored the final basket of the game for the ‘Cats.
The two guards led NMU in the scoring column. Renelique recorded a game-high 26 points while McElroy added 20. Mylan Murphy led the ‘Cats off the glass with seven rebounds. Austin Randel led the Bulldogs with 21 points.
As a team NMU was 29-54 from the floor (53.7 percent). The ‘Cats made half of its three-pointer by going 10-20 (50 percent). NMU was 8-11 from the free throw line (72.7 percent). NMU outrebounded the Bulldogs (35-32) for the game.
The ‘Cats are on the road this coming week with game at Hillsdale (Feb. 18) and Findlay (Feb. 20).
