DETROIT, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team currently in eighth place after three sessions of the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming and Diving Championships currently is being held at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. NMU has recorded 92 points as the host school leads the competition with 342.
In the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle Sarah Cempel led the Wildcats with a 14th-place showing with a time of 18:28.31. Keli Vander Baan placed seventh on the 3-meter board with 398.00 points. Teammate Alison Black was ninth on the board with 358.30 points. Also during the session, the 200 medley relay of Ashley Backman, Olga Budiansky, Jenny Gallagher and Kelsey Sipple placed seventh with a time of 1:51.15.
Thursday’s evening session began with the 200 freestyle relay. NMU was represented by Lauren Cockels, Sipple, Ana Alzaga and Lindsay Stedman. The tandem finished eighth in the event with a time of 1:41.24. In the final event of the second day, the 400 medley relay, the relay of Alzaga, Budiansky, Steadman and Sipple swam a 4:06.98 for an eighth-place finish.
The championships continue through Saturday (Feb. 13).
