Wrestlers return from Dave Schultz Memorial

MARQUETTE The United States Olympic Education Center’s Greco-Roman wrestling team competed at the 12th annual Dave Schultz Memorial International Feb. 3-6 in Colorado Springs, Colo. USOEC athletes dueled against athletes from 22 countries.
Northern Michigan University senior Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn.) took home a bronze medal in the 84 kilogram weight class, winning by default over Dejan Sernek of Slovenia. NMU senior Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) took fifth place in the 55 kg weight class. He won by 2-0, 6-0 decision over Shujin Li of China.
Head Greco-Roman wrestling coach Dennis Hall was pleased with the team’s performance. “They wrestled hard and did very well as a group”, said Hall. “They should have won more matches, but now we know what to work on. We wrestled some of the best competition in the world, but we are moving in the right direction. The guys really want to put in the effort and push themselves in order to prepare for nationals in April.”
NMU senior Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill.) represented the women’s freestyle wrestling team and placed fifth in the 48 kg weight class.
