Bailey Franklin Takes Two Events At Stevens Point
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team competed at the Pointer Invitational over the weekend which was held at UW-Stevens Point. No team score was kept at the event.
The Wildcats had two runners in the finals of the 55-meter dash. Catherine Angeli placed fifth with a time of 7.45 while teammate Brittnee Balbierz was next (7.47). Angeli came back to take second in the 200 with a clocking of 26.22 as Balbierz was fourth (26.67). The 400 saw NMU’s Rachel Williams finish in eighth place (1:02.1).
Maegan Hendershot led the ‘Cats in the 800 with a time of 2:18.57 which was good for third place. The 3,000 saw Kristen Hoklas run an 11:40.72 for an eighth-place showing.
The NMU 4x200 relay of Balbierz, Alyssa Erspamer, Becky Rotter and Angeli ran a 1:46.75 for second place, which was a new school record. In the 4x400 event the relay of Angeli, Balbierz, VanEnkevort and Hendershot were fourth (4:09.35). The third relay event on the schedule was the distance medley as the team of Nora Kiilunen, Hendershot, VanEnkevort and Kristen Schulz won the event in a time of 13:05.66.
The field events saw Bailey Franklin win the triple jump (11.27-meters/36-9) for a new school record, finish third in the long jump (5.17m) and tied for fifth in the high jump (1.57m). Kayleigh Coulson tied for seventh in the high jump (1.57m). Jamie Gotshall with a height of 2.95m tied for sixth in the pole vault. Also placing in the long jump was Melissa Christensen as she was eighth (4.92m). NMU picked up another win in one of the field events when Krista Squiers with a throw of 16.84m won the weight throw.
Franklin also won the indoor pentathlon with 3,136 points. Two other ‘Cats were in the top four as Brooke Granquist was second (2,807) and Christensen fourth (2,685).
The ‘Cats have one final tune-up before the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 26-27). NMU will be at the Lake Superior Challenge Saturday (Feb. 13) which will be held at UM-Duluth.
