MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team had to hold on near the end of its game against the Tiffin University Dragons Saturday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. At the final horn the Wildcats pulled out an 82-72 win over the Dragons.
With the win the ‘Cats improve to 9-11 overall on the season and 6-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Tiffin falls to 1-20 and 0-16 respectively.
In the blink of an eye NMU had 10-2 lead minutes into the game. Marc Renelique accounted for six of the points. Chris Warner gave the ‘Cats a 20-9 edge at 14:29 after his lay-up. Renelique sank another three-pointer at 11:18 to up the ‘Cats advantage to 29-12. The big guy, Jared Benson, got into the long range act as he sank a three-pointer at 7:17 (37-16). With less than five minutes left in the half, Renelique made back-to-back baskets for a 49-22 game. NMU ended the half with a 51-32 lead as Renelique poured in 24 points during the first 20 minutes of play.
Renelique picked up where he left off as he sank a three-pointer at 16:52 for a 58-40 score. Raymont McElroy gave the ‘Cats a 66-51 edge at 13:04 after his jumper. NMU still had a 15-point lead at 8:58 after Warner’s free throw. Tiffin cut the NMU lead to nine points (79-70) with a little more than three minutes left in the game. The remaining portion of the game NMU received points from McElroy off a free throw and a lay-up from Renelique.
Renelique ended the game with a career-high 37 points. He finished the game by going 13-17 from the floor which included 9-13 from beyond the arc. Warner was the only other ‘Cat in double-figures as he ended the game with 11 points. Leading the ‘Cats off the glass were McElroy and Sebastien Salois with five each. DeAngelo Jordan led the Dragons with 32 points.
For the game NMU was 25-46 from the floor (54.3 percent). From the three-point line the ‘Cats were 13-26 (50 percent). NMU was 19-25 from the free throw line (76 percent). Rebounds were in favor of the home team (28-23).
NMU will face Grand Valley State (Feb. 11) and Ferris State (Feb. 13) this coming week at home.
