Four Of Five NMU Starters In Double-Figures
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Four of Northern Michigan University men’s basketball starters ended the game against Ashland in double-figures, but that was not enough as the Eagles took the game by a score of 86-70. The Eagles swept the season series against the Wildcats by virtue of its 67-55 win in Ashland a couple of weeks ago.
NMU falls to 8-11 overall on the season and 5-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Ashland improves to 16-10 and 6-9 respectively.
The Eagles jumped out of the gate and took a 6-0 lead two plus minutes into the game. NMU took its first lead of the game after Jared Benson made a jumper at 14:42 (12-11). About a minute later Benson added to his point total with a three-pointer and a 15-11 lead for the home team. Marc Renelique capped off the 7-0 run with a lay-up at 13:15 (17-11). At 11:43 Renelique gave the ‘Cats a 21-13 lead. NMU would hold the lead even though the Eagles tried to chip away at it. With a little more than seven minutes left in the half, Chris Warner gave NMU the 30-22 score after he made one of his two free throws. Raymont McElroy’s three-pointer at 4:36 gave NMU a 12-point lead (38-26). Ashland used a 14-1 run to end the half and take a one-point lead into the locker room (40-39).
The second half saw the Eagles add to its lead, but NMU would not go away. Renelique with his jumper at 17:11 had the Ashland lead down to one-point (44-43). Ashland had its lead to above 10 with 13:26 left in the game (60-49). Renelique’s jumper at 13:02 had the score 60-51. That would be as close as the ‘Cats would get on the night.
McElroy led the ‘Cats with 22 points. Renelique ended the night with 14 points while Chris Warner had 11 and Benson 10. Bylynn Hatcher led Ashland with 26 points. Benson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
NMU for the game was 25-61 from the floor (41 percent). From beyond the arc the ‘Cats were 8-25 (32 percent). McElroy led NMU with four three-pointers. From the charity stripe the ‘Cats were 12-16 (75 percent). Ashland had a slight edge in the rebounding department (37-34).
The ‘Cats face the Dragons of Tiffin University Saturday (Feb. 6) at approximately 3 p.m. for its second game of the week at the Berry Events Center.
