Wildcats Compete At Northern Challenge
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Saturday at the Superior Dome the Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team hosted its lone home meet of the season, the Northern Challenge. The meet was a non-scoring affair.
Brittnee Balbierz took the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.53 while teammate Alyssa Erspamer was fourth (7.78). Catherine Angeli took the 200 dash with a clocking of 26.59. Becky Rotter (1:02.07) and Rachael Williams (1:03.08) were second and third respectively in the 400 dash.
Kristen Schulz (5:31.67) and Nora Kiilunen (5:33.07) ran the top two times in the mile. In the 800 the Wildcats had the top two finishers as Maegan Hendershot (2:19.65) and Erin VanEnkevort (2:22.81) placed in the event. Katrina Lamansky with a time of 2:37.36 placed sixth in the 800.
The 3,000 saw the event with nine of the 15 runners from NMU. Olivia Juntila won the event (11:13.30) with teammate Rita Woitas (11:28.50) second. The 55 hurdles saw the ‘Cats go one-two with Melissa Christensen breaking the tape first with a time of 8.84 and teammate Bailey Franklin second (8.87).
The 4x200 relay of Erspamer, Balbierz, Colby West and Angeli won the event with a time of 1:48.73. NMU had two relays place in the 4x400 with Balbierz, VanEnkevort, Angeli and Hendershot running a 4:07.32. NMU’s other relay in the event ran a 4:14.76 (Brooke Granquist, Rotter, West and Williams).
The field events saw Bailey Franklin place second in the high jump with a leap of 1.63-meters and Kayleigh Coulson third (1.57m). Karin Diebold won the pole vault (3.05m). Franklin came back to take the long jump (5.18m) with Christensen third (5.03m) and Granquist fourth (4.83m).
Franklin won her second field event when she captured the triple jump (10.90m) as Christensen was third (9.99m) and Mariah Beaman tied for fourth (9.89m). Beaman then came back for a third-place showing in the shot put (10.71m). Krista Squiers won the weight throw (16.93) as Beaman was fifth (11.94m).
NMU will be in action next at the Pointer Invitational Feb. 5-6.
